First Nations Media

History Channel "HistoryLands: Nin Stints" (TV Guide Sat, May 22, 1999) (seen March 30, 2001 10:30-11am)
http://www.historylands.com/sites/12-nan-sdins/

"Dead Man", the 1995 western movie directed by Jim Jarmusch starring Johnny Depp as William Blake, features a beautiful realistic portrayal of northwest culture in the background of part of the story. (FYI: original music by Neil Young, runtime: Belgium:134 / Sweden:120 / USA:121)

At Silver Snail Comics, Toronto February 20, 2001 I asked if there had ever been anything featuring Northwest Coast Native American or Haida designs. The helpful female manager mentioned that there has only ever been one publication that she knows of and that was called "Red Raven." She mentioned that there was one or perhaps two issues at most that were printed of these local artist comics that were professionally printed with glossy covers. After asking if they had any extra on hand she mentioned that the creators came back to collect them because they needed them for a film project or something to that effect.

The National Film Board of Canada produced these two environmental videos (perhaps more) that may provide information and resources: "Blockade" (90 min, 9193 093), "Battle for the Trees" (57 min, 9193 040)

First Nations Actors

I obviously believe it would be better to use Native American Pacific North West Coast talent as actors and musicians. Failing that the next best source would be other Native Americans and other ethnicity groups following.

Although I doubt Adam Beach is Haida, being born in Winnipeg (11/11/72), the handsome Native American actor is in some new movies that I haven't seen: "The Last Stop" 2000, "Little Boy Blues" 2000, "The Adventures of Joe Dirt" 2001 with David Spade and Christopher Walken., amongst other familiar movie titles such as "Windtalkers" 2001, "Mystery, Alaska" 1999, "Smoke Signals" 1998, "Song Of Hiawatha" 1997, "Dance Me Outside" 1994, etc.

I don't know if Annie Galipeau is even Native American let alone Haida. However, in the bland movie about a good man, "Grey Owl"1999 directed by Richard Attenborough with Pierce Brosnan as Archie Grey Owl (Archibald S. Belaney), Annie Galipeau as Anahareo / Pony is absolutely stunning. According to http://us.imdb.com (Internet Movie DataBase) Annie Galipeau has only acted in these three productions: "Grey Owl" 1999, "Shehaweh" 1992 TV Series, and "Map of the Human Heart" 1992 as Young Albertine.

Gary Farmer in Dead Man (1995) as Nobody, Smoke Signals (1998) as Arnold Joseph, Henry & Verlin (1994) as Henry. Michelle Thrush in Dead Man (1995) as Nobody's Girlfriend.

Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman (Shaman in "The Doors" 1991) (Ten Bears in "Dances With Wolves" 1990) no more entries after 1998 on IMDB.com.

It certainly would help the prestige and clout of any production that featured many of the actors now famous from their roles in the Oscar winning "Dances With Wolves": Graham Greene (Kicking Bird), Rodney A. Grant (Wind in His Hair), Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman (Ten Bears), Tantoo Cardinal (Black Shawl), Robert Pastorelli (Timmons), Jimmy Herman (Stone Calf ), Nathan Lee Chasing Horse (Smiles A Lot), Michael Spears (Otter), Jason R. Lone Hill (Worm), Tony Pierce? (Spivey), Doris Leader Charge (Pretty Shield) to name a few.

"The Last Of The Mohicans" (1992) could have potential for character casting sources.

Lou Diamond Phillips
Meg Tilly
Colm Fior

First Nations Music
(Note: Some of these musicians may also make fine actors.)

I do not know if Ulali is Haida. Ulali is a Native American vocal group featured in the soundtrack to "Smoke Signals" featuring Adam Beach. They also sang the popular song "Mahk Jchi" on their own album as well as a version with Robbie Robertson (of The Band) on the album "Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble". In my opinion this group sets a standard to which the score should achieve.

There is a CD on the market called "Sacred Spirit." In Canada it features a Haida mask on the cover, in the USA it features a black and white photograph of a Native American. The same pieces are in a different track order. This is a great album as a whole and the music is beautiful with a modern sampled 'Deep Forest' or 'Enigma' ambient-techno sound. Most tracks are too modern for what I had in mind, however there is much that can be learned, appreciated and emulated when it comes time for a score.

Susan Aglukark is a native Canadian vocalist. I do not know what her native culture is and suspect she is more than just a vocalist.

Peter Buffett composer filmography:
  "Coyotes" (1999)
"500 Nations" (1995) (mini) TV Series
"Dances with Wolves" (1990) ("Fire Dance").
